My first blog post will be three fold, first to tell you what to expect, second to tell you what the title means, and third to tell you what prompted me to start a blog.
Firstly, what is my purpose when I join the world of thought distribution via the internet? I have often started and stopped blogs in the past as they have moved up and down my priority list. This particular time I am starting the blog because every day I read some blogs that outright frighten me. People purporting to be righteous Catholics are on the internet publicly attaching the clergy, the bishops and even at times the papacy. While I watch these people slowly following the path of all the great schisms of the past, I think there needs to be more normal Catholic’s represented in the world.
I never would claim to be a normal Catholic, but I do claim to be one who is loyal and faithful to the Church. I am not free of my own rants and areas where I grow frustrated with the workers of the Church but I know I at the end of the day I like being Catholic and love my Church. Don’t think this blog is going to be a repetition of “isn’t the Church so wonderful?” everyday. I am self-aware enough to realize my Church is comprised of sinful people and so once in a while I will see that come out. I am not naive enough to think the people who make up the Catholic Church are perfect, I just know her creator is.
With that we move into my second point. I hope my blog is not always about the political, cultural or theological topic of the day but it will also allow me to keep friends and family updated on where I am, what I am doing and the good things God has brought into my life.
As November 4th grows closer I will more likely shift into politics mode and go on a few more rants, but again self-awareness is key. I don’t want to turn this into why who ever should or should not be President, so don’t worry too much about that.
My third and final point of this post is to tell people why I picked the title. For those people who know me well, or knew me in my sophomore year the title stultiloquence does not surprise you. Stultiloquence is one of those words you have to use the unabridged dictionary to find. Answer.com defines it as an obscure word. A little etymology lesson Stultiloquence is a Latin word coming from the words stultus, meaning foolish, and loquentia meaning talking. After we know that we can surmise these words put together mean foolish talking, or as answer.com defines the word foolish talking or babble.
There is the etymology of one of my favorite words. But I know many of you are wondering, or more aptly one of you might be wondering, how such a useless word entered my vocabulary and became one of “my favorite words.” Basically against council of many wise people my sophomore year of college I ventured into Catholicism class to learn more about my faith. This class was the worst experience of my collegiate career. To make the many papers I had to write even just a tad more amusing for myself I began the writing process in a new and interesting way. Each paper I would open both volumes of my unabridged World Book Dictionary to a random page and select a word, I would repeat the process until I had 4-6 words. I saw it as my mission to include these words in my paper at any cost. For the final paper the word I pointed to in the second volume was stultiloquence. I couldn’t really think of a non-insulting way to work the word into a paper about my faith so I titled my paper that and turned it in.
Now that I have accomplished my three basic points for my initial post I can end this post. Although the irony of me a Gonzaga educated, Spitzer fan using three points for anything just made me laugh a little.
